What happens next?

As our city has grown, the needs of our community have grown with it.

When Council acquired the Evandale farm for a cultural precinct 40 years ago, the Gold Coast was just a small regional holiday town. Even as far back as the 1970’s the council had planned for this land to be used as the epicentre of the communities cultural needs and events.

We are now Australia’s largest regional city and we have a responsibility to provide the services
expected in a large city.

There is a greater need now for many new services from universities to protected open space,
to infrastructure, to cultural pursuits.

The development of a design brief for the Evandale Cultural Precinct is being overseen by the Evandale Precinct Taskforce, which is chaired by Cr Susie Douglas and consists of the Mayor, stakeholders (including Friends of the Arts Centre) and Councillors.

Council has extended the current terms of reference for the taskforce to the end of July 2010.

The design brief will draw from the many ideas and suggestions which came from the recent Gold Coast Civic and Cultural Precinct Master Plan Ideas Competition - not just the one submission which was judged the winner by the competition jury.

The Taskforce, and the brief, will also take into account the public feedback which is currently being received about the ideas received during the competition.

And the Taskforce Design Brief will also become a community consultation paper, which will be used to gather community opinion.

All feedback generated will help Council undertake detailed costings for an Evandale Cultural and Civic Precinct

But this is early days. There will be a thorough and detailed process and, as yet, there no defined timeline for delivery of the cultural precinct. However Council has recognised the need and public desire for such a facility and this will be reflected in any decision-making relating to the site.
